Stop Fracking in Illinois! This is the website for SAFE, a group of ordinary citizens dedicated to preserving and protecting our region from the devastation which hydraulic fracturing is causing in communities around the U.S. The immediate threat is to Southeastern Illinois, in and around Saline and White counties, but both the consequential damage and the spread of the practice presents a danger to the entire state.
This website is an outstanding resource, full of well-documented information on the environmental and health hazards posed by hydraulic fracturing for natural gas, also known as "fracking. This is the practice of injecting thousands, or millions, of gallons of a mixture of water, sand, and highly toxic carcinogenic chemicals (benzene, diesel fuel, etc.) into the ground at high pressures to fracture the rock and force out natural gas. In addition to the chemicals companies use in their formulas, there is the problem of what is unleashed from the shale itself: methane and other hydrocarbons, salts, heavy metals, and radioactive elements. SAFE is fighting to ban the practice, or, until we can win an outright ban, strongly regulating it to at least slow its expansion and limit the danger.
