Democratic Party of Wisconsin Calls for Support of AB 203
Bill would create a state statute mandating the governor to review legitimacy of Guard federalizations
Madison, WI – On Saturday, June 13 th the Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) approved a floor resolution calling on Democratic legislators to support Assembly Bill 203, introduced by Spencer Black (D-77) in April. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs.
"This wouldn’t affect the current deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan," Spencer Black said about the bill. "It will be valuable to establish an orderly process so that anytime our brave men and women are deployed to an overseas conflict, that it’s done properly."
The approved resolution states: WHEREAS, under the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002, Congress federalized national guard battalions for the limited mission of defending the security of the United States against Iraq;
WHEREAS, Iraq was never a threat and yet Wisconsin’s National Guard remains deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan;
WHEREAS, stronger measures are needed to ensure that Wisconsin’s National Guard is not unlawfully federalized; and
WHEREAS, AB 203 will require the governor to examine future federalization orders and report to the appropriate standing committees;
THEREFORE, RESOLVED, the DPW urges Wisconsin legislators to endorse and support AB 203.
By approving this resolution the DPW joins a broad coalition of the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Green Party, and many other citizens working to reform how the National Guard is used. Concerned citizens are encouraged to contact their state legislators and ask them to support AB 203.
“Bring the Guard Home! It’s the Law.” is a national movement of state campaigns to end unlawful overseas deployment of our National Guard. There are active campaigns in over 20 states working with state legislators to pass bills such as AB 203 here in Wisconsin. With this legislation, the states can begin to reassert their historic national defense responsibilities and to honor the Constitution's genius for distributing power over issues of war and peace.
